The Reavley Theatre School is considered to be one of the most respected and experienced Theatre Schools in the region and has a caring 'family atmosphere'. Children from as young as 3 years old to professional dancers are encouraged to take their first dance steps or prepare for their teaching examinations or auditions in a happy safe environment. Each child is valued as an individual and developed to reach their full potential. We also provide adult dance classes combining fitness with fun.
Sandra Reavley, a Fellow and Life Member of the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) and a Registered Life member of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), opened the first school in January 1973 at St. Mary's Church Hall, Heworth, Gateshead. In November 1982 an additional school at Cromer Avenue, United Reform Church in Lowfell, Gateshead was opened.
In September 2005 we were very proud to open our own studio’s at Clayton House, Gateshead. The school has three studios a ballet studio with maple sprung flooring, a tap and music studio with Harlequin stage flooring, both having mirrored walls and ballet barres. The third large studio is converted into a drama studio. There is a Reception room where parents can sit if they wish, and have a hot drink, whilst their children have their classes. There are several changing rooms for the pupils.
After gaining her IDTA Associate teachers qualification, and her Honours Degree in Education, Sandra’s daughter Vicki is now also a principal teacher.
All pupils are prepared for internationally recognized exams of the IDTA this encourages a gradual progress and a chance to achieve according to their talents and abilities. Children are prepared for a wide range of exams from Rosettes for ages four and above to Advanced Artist exams and teaching exams which can be taken from sixteen years of age for interested pupils. The school sets a high standard we have had 100% success rate in our exams thus far and several of our pupils have been recommended and have won IDTA Scholarships in Manchester. These scholarships are given to pupils with outstanding examination marks and all pupils of higher grade exams are considered by the IDTA examiners for scholarship potential, in our last exam session we were awarded 5 International Awards three in Modern Jazz and two in Ballet.
Reavley Theatre School enjoys taking part in local dance festivals. If you are child is interested and selected he/she will need to attend extra classes. All pupils who have solo work are expected to represent the school in group work.
Our fees are kept to a very competitive level. Reductions are made for sisters/brothers taking our musical theatre course and a third child’s normal weekly classes are free. Although fees may be paid weekly, they are termly fees and must be paid whether the child attends or not, this encourages regular attendance which allows the child to progress more quickly. In case of prolonged illness only two back weeks are charged provided we are notified. Classes must be paid for if a child has a holiday in term time. Please do not allow fees to become overdue, this is for your benefit as much as ours. Please let us know if you are having problems with fees before they go into arrears to see if anything can be done.
